The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) has received over 400 responses from companies, industry bodies and government departments on the draft personal data protection bill. The deadline to submit suggestions on the government's draft personal data protection bill was October 10, 2018.

The ministry will now systematically analyse all the responses. This will be followed by further consultation with associated stakeholders and certain ministries like the ministry of law and justice. Further, the ministry will take into account these suggestions before proposing the bill in Parliament during the winter session in November-December 2018.

According to some of the suggestions received, the language of the draft bill should be tightened in order to avoid its multiple interpretations in the future. While some other suggestions were focussed around the costs associated with mandatory localisation of data. Many global industry bodies are of the view that data localisation proposed in the draft bill could have significant negative effects on the ability of companies to do business in India.
