According to Data Security Council of India (DSCI), government needs to pay special attention in the cybersecurity space to enable India to come at par with its global counterparts.

According to experts, the government’s support for cybersecurity should come in areas such as funding, skilling and providing a thriving environment for cybersecurity firms.

At present, US is the leader in the cybersecurity space having 130 out of the top 500 cybersecurity firms in the world. US is followed by Israel which has a share of 42 companies out of these 500 firms.

DSCI has pointed out that cybersecurity should be declared as a strategic sector by the government as this would enable the incoming of strategic investments. Further, a stream of government funding should be created which can be accessed by entrepreneurs, as is happening globally.

On its part, DSCI is working with investors, large enterprises and government to help entrepreneurs with early stage funding in this space. To this end, DSCI is working with the Technology Development Board (TDB) under the Department of Science & Technology to launch their commercialisation programme for cybersecurity. Earlier in 2017, TDB had called for applications from cybersecurity companies in the growth stage and is in the process of evaluating these applications at present. Under this programme TDB offers loans at an interest rate of 5 per cent per annum.

Over the years the threat landscape in cybersecurity space has grown and has become increasingly sophisticated. As a result large service companies have increased their investment in cybersecurity. DSCI is working with such service companies and helping product start-ups get market access.
