DoT to take a call on the Supreme Court’s Aadhaar verdict soon

October 10, 2018

The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) is soon going to take a call on the Supreme Court’s (SC) verdict on the use of Aadhaar. According to the telecom ministry, the DoT has studied the SC’s verdict, which barred private entities from using Aadhaar to digitally authenticate subscriber data and would soon come out with a final decision that will comply with the ruling but also protect consumers.

The SC verdict was a big setback for operators as they were using the Aadhaar number for instantaneous customer verification, which helped in activating a new connection in less than an hour as compared to 5-7 days through the earlier process of physical verification. Further, the Aadhaar verification process also entailed a much lower cost.

Operators are also waiting for directions from the DoT on the method for complying with know-your-customer (KYC) rules and on the need and methodology to destroy data collected through the Aadhaar verification process.
