DoT amends unified licence norms for telcos and VNOs

October 09, 2018

The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) has amended the unified licence (UL) norms for telecom operators and virtual network operators (VNOs) to include the regulatory framework for application of net neutrality principles.

Under the amended rules, the licensees have been prohibited from entering into any agreement or contract that might reflect discriminatory treatment of content.

As a result of the amendment, operators, who were otherwise constrained under the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India’s (TRAI) differential pricing regulation, will now get some leeway in pricing their valued added services in three areas- specialised services, content delivery networks, and traffic management.

Telecommunications Commission had approved the recommendations of the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) with regard to net neutrality on July 11, 2018.
