The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) is going to roll out a scheme to increase the fibre deployment wherein the service operators or infrastructure companies can take optic fibre cable (OFC) deployed under BharatNet to the telecom towers. This would help in rolling out more Wi-Fi hotspots and also improve 4G connectivity in India.

In this regard, the DoT officials held discussions with telecom infrastructure firms led by the Tower and Infrastructure Providers Association (TAIPA).

Currently, about 22 per cent of the total telecom towers have been fiberised which is an important backhaul requirement for high-speed data network deployments. However, according to industry estimates fibre-connected towers would grow from 90,000 at present to 330,000 by 2020.
