SC demands reply from government and BSNL on use of 2G in Assam and Arunachal Pradesh

October 09, 2018

The Supreme Court (SC) has demanded a reply from the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) and Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL)in response to a plea to discontinue deployment of 2G networks in Assam and Arunachal Pradesh.

As per the petitioner, 2G technology was being used in these areas even after the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) and the DoT had stated that the technology was outdated. The Ministry of Communications had also directed all mobile networks to be 4G.

However, according to the petitioner’s claims, 2G towers were still being installed in these areas. Further, the cost associated for installation of the towers is Rs 8 million per tower which is much higher than the Rs 1.1 million per tower cost for 2G technology.

The petitioner’s plea would put an end to an agreement worth Rs 22.58 billion between the DOT and BSNL mandating the use of 2G technology. Earlier, the NGO had approached the Delhi High Court with the same plea but it had been dismissed.

Apart from this the plea also stated that as per the Indian Telegraphy Act, the government was obliged to provide all types of telegraphy services at affordable rates to rural and unconnected areas.
