In a recent development, the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) has partnered with Cisco Systems to showcase 5G use cases specific to India that will help address various problems that citizens face in areas such as education, agriculture, and healthcare. To this end, Cisco has signed agreements with Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) and Niti Aayog, under the aegis of DoT. As part of this, Cisco will use technologies such as internet of things (IoT) and artificial intelligence (AI).

The agreements signed with BSNL and Niti Aayog are part of the next phase of Cisco’s ‘Country Digital Acceleration' program in India.

Earlier, DoT had written to various multinational telecom technology vendors to conduct 5G trials in the country and develop India specific 5G use cases. DoT had offered partnership to Cisco, Samsung, Nokia and Ericsson. However, DoT did not write to any of the China based vendors such as Huawei and ZTE.

In addition to this, DoT also approached operators - Bharti Airtel and Reliance Jio - to develop and showcase India-specific 5G use cases.
