Jio partners with ISRO and HCIL to provide 4G LTE services using satellites in rural and remote areas

Reliance Jio Infocomm Limited (RJIL) is going to provide 4G long term evolution (LTE) connectivity in the rural and remote areas of India by using satellite network. In this regard, the company would use the capacity of Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) and the technology of Hughes Communications India Limited (HCIL).

With the help of this network, RJIL plans to connect around 400 LTE sites which do not have terrestrial backhaul service. The network would be deployed in phases. In this regard, RJIL has signed a contract with HCIL amounting to $10 million for setting up the satellite backhaul.

As per the partnership with HCIL, RJIL would set up two earth stations in Mumbai and Nagpur, and two mini hubs in Leh and Port Blair for the satellite backhaul-based services which provide connectivity in the Northeast, Jammu and Kashmir, Uttaranchal, Andaman Nicobar, and Lakshadweep.
