The government is planning to enable around 6,000 railway stations with Wi-Fi connectivity over the next six to eight months. Under the programme, the Indian Railways (IR) is aiming to ensure last mile connectivity in areas which have not been connected with fibre optics.

According to Piyush Goyal, Minister of Railways, the IR was focusing on smarter project implementation and ensuring access to technology in the remotest parts of the country.

Further, the punctuality of trains has improved to 73-74 per cent since April 1, 2018 as a result of replacing the manual recording of time by station masters with data loggers placed at interchange points across the network that ensure computer generated time. The IR is also deploying a GPS device on every locomotive, in order to have real time tracking.
