Reliance Jio Infocomm Limited (RJIL) has surpassed Vodafone India to become the second largest telco by revenue in India. The jump in RJIL’s revenue can be attributed to its strong performance in the rural markets and aggressive pricing. RJIL is now closing in on market leader Bharti Airtel.

According to the financial data of the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI), RJIL’s revenue market share (RMS) stood at 22.4 per cent in April-June, 2018. On the other hand, RMS of Bharti Airtel, Vodafone India and Idea Cellular stood at 31.7 per cent, 19.3 per cent and 15.4 per cent respectively.

In the quarter ended March, 2018 RJIL had overtaken Idea in terms of RMS. Moreover, Vodafone and Idea have been losing to Jio largely due to the ongoing price wars.

RJIL’s strong performance comes at a time when Vodafone and Idea are on the verge of completing their merger, which would make the combined entity the largest in terms of RMS in India.
