Curbing unsolicited communication to cost telcos up to 4 billion, says COAI

August 06, 2018

According to the Cellular Operators’ Association of India (COAI), the new rules on curbing pesky calls and messages through Blockchain technology will cost the industry around Rs 2 billion - 4 billion.

COAI’s comments have come in response to the Telecom Commercial Communication Customer Preference Regulation, 2018, released by Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI). As per the rules, an individual can revoke permission granted to any commercial entity for a service.

In its regulation, TRAI has raised the penalty cap on telecom operators from Rs 500,000 per month to Rs 5 million per month. The rules also permit subscribers to set preference about days and time bands on which, they would like to receive commercial communications as well as indicate preferred modes of communication.

COAI has further pointed out that the current December 2018 timeline is unfeasible for customising the system to comply with the new rules and that telcos should be allowed at least one year to put the full system architecture in place.
