COAI urges the government to auction spectrum in E and V bands

The Cellular Operators Association of India (COAI) has requested the government to not delicense spectrum in the E and V bands. As per the COAI, such a move would hurt licensed carriers, reduce the central exchequer’s revenue, compromise national security and would benefit a handful of foreign internet companies.

The COAI has recommended the government auction the airwaves in the E and V bands that can be used as backhaul to connect mobiles where fibre is not available and gradually for 5G services instead of delicensing it.

Further, the COAI emphasised that since the government had decided to assign access spectrum only through auction in 2012, post orders of the Supreme Court and if the Centre now intends to allocate part of the V band for access services, it is imperative that it should be assigned through auction.
