DoT gives conditional approval to Vodafone-Idea merger; demands Rs 72 billion in spectrum charges

July 10, 2018

The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) has given conditional approval to the merger of Vodafone India with Idea Cellular and has sought over Rs 72 billion from both companies on account of one-time spectrum charges (OTSC) and spectrum liberalisation fees.

The cumulative amount includes a bank guarantee of more than Rs 33 billion from Idea Cellular for OTSC and Rs 39 billion from Vodafone India for the administrative spectrum that was awarded to it when it began operations.

With this approval, the new merged entity will emerge as the largest carriers by customers not only in India but also world over. It will be better placed to fight out new entrant Reliance Jio and current market leader Bharti Airtel.

The merger of Idea cellular and Vodafone India will create a company with Rs 630 billion of revenue, 39 per cent customer market share and nearly 42 per cent revenue market share, across India.
