TRAI recommends mobile manufacturers to make handsets for the differently abled

July 10, 2018

The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has recommended mobile manufacturers who manufacture five handsets or more to make at least one handset which can be accessed by the differently abled by 2020. The TRAI has done this in order to make information and communication technologies (ICT) accessible for the differently abled.

Additionally, the TRAI has also suggested the formation of a steering committee under the Department of Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities to create guidelines, implementation and monitoring mechanisms to improve ICT accessibility for persons with disabilities. Trai has suggested that telecom, and broadcast operators have special desks in their call centres to handle calls from the differently-abled using assistive technologies.

Further, it has also suggested that all government websites be made accessibility compliant.
