PMO seeks details of Vodafone-Idea merger deal from the DoT

July 09, 2018

The Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) has sought details from the Department of Telecommunication (DoT) on the process being followed with regard to the proposed Idea Cellular-Vodafone India merger amid delays in deal closure.

As per industry sources, senior officers of DoT recently gave an in-person explanation to PMO on the present status and the process being followed in the proposed merger deal.

The progress of the merger is being closely followed by overseas investors and multinational companies, especially as UK’s Vodafone, which has had a long-standing tax dispute with the Indian government, is involved. Also, the government’s policies around ease of doing business would come into question if procedural delays become a mainstay in as high-profile a merger as this.

Manoj Sinha, Minister of Communications had earlier asserted that there was no delay from DoT’s side and that it was important to follow due process. DoT recently sought another round of clarifications from the assistant solicitor general (ASG) on the dues and this will push the timeline of conditional clearance even further.

As per popular industry opinion, both the parties will exhaust all their legal options to push their respective case. This will further delay the process.
