Home Ministry decides to set up a panel for monitoring cyber crimes

July 05, 2018

The Union Home Ministry has decided to set up a panel that would be used to monitor cyber crimes. This has been done to facilitate compliance of complaints by social media platforms which have been used to spread offensive content thereby leading to law and order issues. This initiative has come up in the wake of many rumours being spread through the social media which has led to the lynching of innocent people.

This panel would be under the supervision of joint secretary of Cyber and Information Security (CIS), mainly focussing on monitoring objectionable cyber content and strive for better coordination between the law enforcement agencies and the state police to block, remove or take action against objectionable information.

The information collected by the panel would be reviewed by Home secretary Rajiv Gauba to decide on whether any issue requires cooperation on the part of social media platforms in criminal investigations.

Finally, the ministry has also been planning on sensitising law enforcement agencies to enhance coordination with the Department of Telecommunications (DoT).
