TRAI reiterates its stand on sale or rent of global calling cards in India

June 27, 2018

The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has stuck to its recommendations on the sale or rent of global calling cards in India, despite the contentions of the Department of Telecommunications (DoT).

TRAI has suggested mandating toll free customer care number to help users availing of such services, and also permitting the sale of global SIM cards only digitally.

TRAI has reiterated its suggestion that users be compensated in case of non-activation of services. The DoT’s view was that no provision of penalty payment exists even by other operators to customers.

Further, TRAI has stood by its suggestion that entities engaged in sale or rent of such services should be answerable to TRAI. The DoT stated that under the current dispensation such entities report to the ministry as it asked TRAI to reconsider its suggestion.

TRAI has also reiterated its recommendation on allowing purchase of global calling cards or international SIM cards though digital mode only. TRAI’s reasoning for this is that such sale should be at par with the process followed for other telecom services.
