Government extends telecom equipment testing deadline to March 2019

June 26, 2018

The government has extended the deadline for mandatory local telecom equipment testing to March 31, 2019. The government aims to implement its plan in phases starting from October 1, 2018. It will initially limit to equipment such as fax machines and modems and later on increase the number of equipment under its ambit.

The decision has come after the Cellular Operators Association of India (COAI), in a letter dated May 29, 2018, requested the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) to extend the deadline and to also allow existing test reports to stand valid as long as there is no change in equipment’s configuration.

The COAI has also sought to keep software out of the test certification criterion, and advocated setting up of full-fledged test labs, ahead of such a mandatory testing.

The industry players have largely opposed the move for mandatory local testing stating that it would delay network deployments and expansion, and would cost the industry an estimated Rs 15 billion annually towards assessment charges.
