DoT considers demand of Rs 47 billion from Vodafone ahead of merger with Idea

June 25, 2018

The merger of Vodafone India and Idea Cellular is likely to get delayed beyond the expected June 30, 2018 timeline as the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) is considering a fresh demand of around Rs 47 billion regarding one-time spectrum charges (OTSC) from Vodafone India.

The DoT is likely to ask Vodafone India to either clear the outstanding amount or furnish bank guarantee before its merger with Idea Cellular.

Earlier in 2015, Vodafone had merged its four subsidiaries into one company known as Vodafone India. At that time, the DoT had asked Vodafone India to clear dues worth Rs 66.78 billion but Vodafone India challenged it in court. Eventually, Vodafone India had paid only Rs 20 billion to get clearance for the deal.

The DoT has received legal opinion on the matter, as per which a demand can be raised by it from Vodafone India. However, the final amount is still being deliberated upon and may involve interest. The demand is likely to be raised next week.

This demand will be in addition to the bank guarantee of around Rs 21 billion sought by the DoT from Idea Cellular over OTSC dues.
