Government makes it easier for mobile manufacturers to import used machinery for phones

June 20, 2018

In a recent move, the government has made it easier to import used machinery for the manufacturing of mobile phones and other electrical equipment. This move will reduce the clearance time from a few months to a few days.

According to the latest notification by the Ministry of Environment, Forests and Climate Change, used plant machinery that have a residual life of at least five years for manufacturing electronics and electrical items will not require explicit permission from the 'hazardous and other waste committee'.

Prior to this notification, handset and other component assembly and manufacturing units had to wait for the committee to give permissions. However, with the coming of the notification, now companies just have to submit the necessary documents to import the machinery and need not seek explicit permission.
