Government making positive strides in reviving the telecom sector, says Manoj Sinha

According to Manoj Sinha, Minister of Communications, the government has revived confidence among industry stakeholders and will ensure that sector’s growth remains uninterrupted. The government has taken positive steps in matters relating to interest rates or deferred spectrum payment. Further, there has been an improvement in the call drop situation.

According to Sinha, though there has been some job losses in the wake of ongoing consolidation, high number of job opportunities are been created and skilled workforce of the will not remain jobless.

The number of base transceiver stations has increased to 1.8 million in 2018 from 790,000 in 2014. Additionally, the government fetched highest revenue of Rs 650 billion in 2015 and 2016 from spectrum auctions.

India has highest data consumption of 1.3 billion Gigabytes (GB) per month with cheapest tariff globally. The telecom sector received $6.1 billion in foreign direct investment (FDI) in 2017-18 as compared to $1.3 billion in 2015-16.

As per Sinha, despite lacking 4G technology-based services, both Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited and Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Limited, continue to stay competitive in the Indian telecom landscape.
