Jio emerges as the third largest player by revenue market share in QE March 2018

June 12, 2018

Reliance Jio Infocomm Limited (RJIL) has become the third largest telecom operator by revenue market share (RMS) during quarter ended March 2018.  It overtook Idea Cellular and closed in its RMS gap with Vodafone India courtesy its aggressive pricing strategies.  Jio’s RMS stood at almost 20 per cent in the Jan-March 2018 quarter, whereas that of Vodafone stood at 21 per cent.

Jio’s robust RMS numbers come as Idea and Vodafone India prepare to close their much-awaited merger this month, creating a Rs 630 billion revenue entity with some 430 million subscribers.

Jio, which started operations in September 2016 with a nationwide 4G network, reported an over 18 per cent sequential jump in adjusted gross revenue (including national long distance revenue) to Rs 63 billion the quarter ended March 2018, while Airtel, Vodafone India and Idea suffered sequential falls of 5.5 per cent, 4.8 per cent and 8.8 per cent on this score to Rs 101 billion, Rs 67 billion and Rs 52 billion.

Analysts expect the eroding revenue of Jio’s rivals to stabilise in the first quarter of FY 19, with the tariff environment largely stable over the past few months and the rapid conversions of subscribers from voice to data. They also expect that Jio would overtake Vodafone in terms of RMS very soon.
