DoT to commercially launch Public Open Wi-Fi project in July 2018; roll out 10,000 access points

June 11, 2018

The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) is planning to launch 10,000 Wi-Fi hotspots across the country in July 2018, and will scale it to 100,000 within three months.

DoT’s ‘Public Open Wi-Fi’ project aims to encourage the use of Wi-Fi by offering affordable internet connectivity to people in tier-2 and 3 towns in India. In October 2017, a pilot was conducted to test the system and check interoperability between Wi-Fi networks. The result of the pilot released by the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) from 603 access points shows that 96.3 per cent of users found the system friendly.

As per the DoT, the project is expected to create 500,000 entrepreneurs on the infrastructure provisioning front. In addition, people who can get into content creation and sachetisations is also significant.

The concept of delivery of public Wi-Fi, as envisaged by DoT is through public data office (PDO). PDOs are similar to the PCOs that connected all of India several years ago.
