DoT floats tender to install 500,000 Wi-Fi hotspots across gram panchayats by end-2018

June 08, 2018

The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) has floated a tender to install over 500,000 Wi-Fi hotspots across gram panchayats (GP) with an estimated cost of Rs 40 billion.

The project is expected to be rolled out by the end of 2018. The Wi-Fi hotspots will be available for public in rural areas and will  connect social institutions like police station, primary health centres, schools, post offices etc. The Wi-Fi service provided through these hotspots will also allow users to make voice calls using broadband.

According to the tender document, one Wi-Fi hotspot will be deployed in GPs with population of up to 1,000,  two in GPs with population of 3,500, three in GPs with population of 7,500, four for GPs with population of 12,000 and 5 Wi-Fi hotspots in GPs where population is above 12,000.

The vendor deploying Wi-Fi or wireless broadband services will need to operate and maintain the entire infrastructure for a minimum period of four years from the date of successful deployment.

Estimated budget for installation of Wi-Fi hotspots per GP has been kept at Rs 1,50, 000. Further, around 2,30,000 GPs are estimated to be covered under the project.
