PGCIL to offer up to 20 per cent of its towers to telecom operators on lease

May 31, 2018

State-run Power Grid Corporation of India Limited (PGCIL) is planning to offer anywhere between 10 per cent and 20 per cent of its 150,000 tower assets, across the country, to telecom operators in a bid to leverage its tower infrastructure for additional revenues.

The company has approached the Central Electricity Regulatory Commission (CERC) for approval. According to PGCIL, with the government’s emphasis on reducing consumption of diesel at tower sites to reduce pollution, its towers will be a good option for telecom operators.

The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has recommended 40 per cent reduction in carbon emission in the telecom network by 2022-23, with base year being 2011-12. The TRAI has also suggested that all the benefits granted under various schemes for using renewable energy technologies should be passed on to telecom operators as well.
