DoT extends deadline for stakeholder comments on NDCP 2018 to June 1, 2018

May 28, 2018

The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) has extended the deadline for public and stakeholder comments on the draft National Digital Communications Policy (NDCP), 2018, to June 1, 2018. Earlier, the deadline for comments was May 25, 2018.

According to the DoT, several stakeholders had requested for more time to provide their inputs on the draft policy, which is why this extension has been provided.

The upcoming new telecom policy aims to attract investments to the tune of $100 billion in the digital communications space by 2020. Further, this policy is also expected to create 4 million new jobs, and boost the telecom sector's contribution to 8 per cent of India's gross domestic product (GDP) from about 6 per cent in 2017. The policy will strictly also adhere to the principles of net neutrality.

Under the policy, the government plans to optimally price spectrum and review levies such as license fees and spectrum usage charges (SUC) as well as merger and acquisitions rules to ease exits. In addition, it will also take a fresh look at spectrum sharing, leasing and trading guidelines, as part of its approach that spectrum is a key natural resource which is to be used for public benefit.
