May 15, 2018

As per Ravi Shankar Prasad, Minister of Law and Justice and Electronics and Information Technology, the government is aiming at more than doubling production of mobile phones in India in the next two years. According to the minister, the number of mobile phone factories has increased from two to 120 since 2014. Approximately, 220 million mobile phones have been manufactured and the government has set a target to manufacture 500 million mobile phones in coming two years.

The minister further highlighted that common service centres (CSC) were operational in around 200,000 gram panchayats (GP). This figure has risen from 25,000-30,000 GPs which had CSCs. Further, CSCs will be opened in all of the country’s 250,000 GPs in the coming 2-3 months.

Further, the volume and value of transactions done at CSCs has increase multi-fold from 111.3 million transactions worth Rs 1.82 billion in 2013-14 to 173.8 million transactions worth Rs 199.25 billion over four years.

In addition, 110 micro manufacturing units of sanitary pads have been opened and soon at least one unit should be opened in every block of the country. The minister also asked to explore the possibility of involvement of CSCs in health insurance scheme and support the citizens in availing this unique initiative of the government.
