Smartphone market in India witnesses 11 per cent growth in first quarter of 2018, according to IDC

May 14, 2018

According to International Data Corporation's (IDC) Quarterly Mobile Phone Tracker report, the Indian smartphone market witnessed an 11 per cent year-on-year (YoY) growth in the first quarter of 2018. A total shipment of 30 million units has been registered in the reporting quarter.

Among players, Xiaomi managed to doubled its volume on YoY basis, owing to its expansion in the offline channel space. The China-based smartphone manufacturer was followed by Samsung which recorded flat annual growth in the reporting quarter. OPPO ranked third, moving up from the fifth rank it held in the last quarter of 2017 while Vivo slipped to fourth position as its shipments declined by 29.4 per cent YoY. China-based Transsion (along with its four brands - itel, Tecno, Infinix and Spice) made its debut in the top five players with more than threefold annual growth in shipments in the first quarter.

The report further stated that the ultra-high-end segment (over $600 per handset) witnessed YoY growth of 68 per cent owing to increased shipments of Samsung's Galaxy S9 series which was launched in the quarter ended December 2017. The handset comprised 77 per cent of market share in the ultra-high end segment. OnePlus, with its models 5 and 5T, accounted for more than 50 per cent share in the high-end segment.

IDC has forecasted that the government push for high-end electronics local manufacturing and accompanying duty hike puts most of the mobile phone vendors under further margin pressure. However, a vendor looking to establish itself for long term will have to show commitment by setting up the SMT units locally.

Further, as per the report, Smartphone market will continue its double-digit growth in 2018 with the popularity and focus on budget phones.
