DoT to meet GSMA on April 17, 2018 to discuss various issues

April 12, 2018

The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) is scheduled to meet global industry body, GSM Association (GSMA) on April 17, 2018 to discuss various issues. As per reports, mobile phone cloning will remain a key issue of discussion among the two parties.

The meeting will be a follow-up to the issues raised by the telecom minister, Manoj Sinha during his visit to the Mobile World Congress in February 2018. The issues raised by the telecom minister included cloning of unique identity number of mobile handsets, international mobile equipment identity (IMEI) numbers as well as SIMs. However, the GSMA is not the only body that can help in resolving the problem of fake SIMs. Therefore, the DoT plans to discuss the issue of fake SIMs with other bodies separately.

Further, the DoT is also expected to seek the GSMA’s help in implementing the Central Equipment Identity Register (CEIR) system, which it is developing with the help of Centre for Development of Telematics (C-DoT). The system will block all services on stolen or lost mobile phones on any network even if the SIM card is removed or the IMEI number of the handset is changed.

In addition, the DoT and GSMA will also discuss the roadmap for capacity building, knowledge and global best practices sharing program.
