According to Aruna Sundararajan, secretary, Department of Telecommunications (DoT), the 5G Forum has already commenced its work and outlaying its action plan for 5G by setting up of test beds and pilots. By June 2018, India will have its 5G roadmap ready. There has been intense activity in the last five to six months in the area of 5G but a lot of work remains to be done.

In September 2017, the government set up a high-level 5G Forum with members across academics, industry and the telecom department to decide the strategy for the rollout of 5G by 2020. Further, with BharatNet expected to reach out to 250,000 gram panchayats by December 2018, the department is pre-deciding the integration path for 5G in order to leverage its capabilities in rural areas as well.  The upcoming National Telecom Policy 2018 would have ingredients such as declaration of spectrum, regulatory clarity and facilitate creation of sandboxes for innovation.

According to Aruna Sundararajan, secretary, DoT, “5G technology evolution is expected to enable new services, connecting new industries, various forms of devices, and empower new user experiences, to support expanded connectivity needs for the next decade and beyond. We will soon see a transformation in the way we live due to 5G and I am glad that India is at the forefront of this change.”

She also stated that DoT is in the final stages of approving the merger between Idea Cellular and Vodafone India. Although the process involves a number of clearances including foreign direct investment (FDI) approval and liberalization of licenses, the DoT is in the process of expediting it.
