State-run operator Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited is reportedly preparing for the launch of 5G technology. The operator has signed memorandum of understandings (MoU) with Nokia, ZTE and a Korean firm and is also in talks with Japan’s NTT for the same.

Currently though, BSNL is preparing to launch 4G services across the country except for Delhi and Mumbai by June 2018. According to BSNL, the government is likely to infuse Rs 70 billion in the form of equity while the company will invest approximately Rs 55 billion. The approval is expected to come in April 2018.

BSNL had given contracts to Nokia and ZTE for setting up its 4G networks. The company also asked the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) for the allotment of separate 4G spectrum. Earlier, the operator had requested the government for 5 MHz spectrum in the 2100 MHz band in order to deploy 4G services pan-India except in Rajasthan where it will use the 800 MHz.

Meanwhile, the company is also expanding the number of Wi-Fi hotspots and is targeting to install another 100,000 Wi-Fi hotspots in coming year. BSNL expects to aggregate revenue anywhere between Rs 2-2.5 billion from this business.
