Huawei to expand smartphone manufacturing capacity in India; add OEM partners

March 15, 2018

Huawei Technologies is planning to ramp up the handset production capacity at its Chennai facility as well as increase the number of its original equipment maker (OEM) partners in a bid to boost local smartphone manufacturing. Huawei is targeting a market share above 10 per cent in India from the present level of about 2 per cent.

The smartphone manufacturer plans to domestically manufacture its mid-tier Honor-branded offerings as well as its premium smartphone models sold under the Huawei brand. The initial capacity expansion will be reflected in expansion of production capacity of its Honor line

At present, approximately 80 per cent of Honor devices are being manufactured in India. This figure is likely to rise as soon as Huawei’s capacity expansion targets are finalised.

Further, Huawei has only one OEM partner at the moment for its mobile devices business in India, and is looking to add two more OEM partners depending on business requirements, economies of scale benefits and expanded production targets.
