BSNL and MTNL among the top-three loss making PSUs in 2016-17, says report

According to The Public Enterprises Survey 2016-17, released by the Department of Public Enterprises, Ministry of Heavy Industries and Public Enterprises, Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL), Air India and Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Limited (MTNL) incurred the highest losses among all public sector units (PSU).

The survey outlined that 82 central public sector enterprises (CPSE) incurred losses to the tune of Rs 250.45 billion in 2016-17, compared to Rs 307.59 billion in 2015-16. This represents an 18.58 per cent reduction in their losses.

MTNL incurred the maximum losses in the year, followed by BSNL and debt-ridden Air India. The losses incurred by these three CPSEs accounted for approximately 55.66 per cent of the total losses of the top ten loss-making CPSEs.

Overall, profits of 257 operating PSUs grew by 11.7 per cent, up from Rs 1.14 trillion in 2015-16 to Rs 1.27 trillion in 2016-17. Further, the net worth of all CPSEs increased from Rs 10.79 trillion in 2015-16 to Rs 11.07 trillion in 2016-17, an increase of 2.60 per cent.
