ATC loses over 50,000 tenancies due to operator consolidation

Tuesday, 13 March 2018

American Tower Corporation (ATC) lost approximately 57,500 tenancies in India due to the ongoing consolidation in the Indian telecom sector. The biggest loss (nearly 30,000 tenancies) was the outcome of Tata Teleservices Limited’s exit from the sector.

Further, the tower firm lost 10,000 tenancies from Aircel, which has closed down operations across six circles and another 7,500 tenancies from Vodafone India and Idea Cellular, which are trimming overlapping sites due to their merger. ATC also lost an additional 5,000 tenancies each from Reliance Communications (RCOM) and Telenor India.

Prior to the consolidation, ATC’s total tenancies stood at 122,000. The tower company’s tenancy ratio has fallen from 2.18 to 1.40.

However, the company expects a rise in tenancies post the acquisition of 20,135 mobile towers held by Vodafone India and Idea Cellular, which is expected to be completed in the first half of 2018. ATC signed an agreement to acquire these telecom towers in November 2017 for about Rs 78.50 billion. The deal is expected to consolidate ATC’s position as the second-largest telecom tower company with nearly 80,000 towers.
