About 185,000 Aircel customers register to join BSNL network in Tamil Nadu circle

March 07, 2018

Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) has stated that about 185, 000 existing customers of Aircel have registered under the mobile number portability (MNP) facility to join its network in the Tamil Nadu circle. Earlier, Aircel filed for bankruptcy as the company has been facing troubled times in a highly financially stressed industry.

During February 2018, 57,345 customers ported into BSNL through MNP from Aircel. Further, the state-run operator added that during March 1, 2018 to March 5, 2018, 128,000 customers have ported into BSNL, while 66,886 customers have already joined the network.

Meanwhile, BSNL is upgrading its infrastructure to handle sudden increase in subscribers. The operator is expected to investRs4.19 billion in expanding both GSM and network infrastructure in Tamil Nadu. Additionally, Tamil Nadu telecom circle has been allotted 799,000 additional line/subscriber capacity with a project cost of Rs3.33 billion under phase VIII project. This envisages replacement of 2G Nortel base transceiver station (BTS) equipment purchased under phase IV project to improve quality of service in the circle, expand 3G services and provide 4G services. The GSM expansion project will be completed by December 2018.

Moreover, the operator has stated that under the initiative to set up BSNL Wi-Fi hotspots in the country, 58 locations with 84 access points have so far been commissioned in Tamil Nadu. Further, on the launch of 4G services, BSNL stated that it has signed an agreement with Nokia to roll it out in 10 circles in the Western and Southern zones of the country, including in Tamil Nadu. Moreover, 566 4G e-Node B equipment has been allotted for providing 4G services in the Tamil Nadu circle, which will be provided on allocation of spectrum by the Department of Telecommunications.
