UIDAI orders operators to provide users with the facility to check SIM-Aadhaar linkage

March 05, 2018

The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) has asked all telecom operators to provide their subscribers with a facility to check if their mobile number has been linked with Aadhaar. Telecom operators have been directed to make this new facility available by March 15, 2018.

As per the directive, telecom operators will have to provide a facility to users to check whether their mobile number is linked with their Aadhaar as well as if any other mobile number is issued or verified with their Aadhaar number.

This move is aimed to prevent unauthorised use of Aadhaar. The UIDAI had come to learn that some retailers, operators and agents of telecom companies were allegedly misusing Aadhaar authentication to issue fresh SIMs or for re-verification of numbers. In response to such misuse, the UIDAI has also warned operators to ensure that their network of retailers and agents is not indulging in fraudulent activities.
