All SIM based M2M devices to carry 13 digit mobile number, says DoT

February 21, 2018

The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) has directed all telecom service providers to start issuing 13 digit mobile numbers to SIM based machine to machine (M2M) communication devices. These SIM cards will co-exist with the present 10-digit mobile numbers scheme.

According to a DoT notice, Indian telecom service providers have hitherto been using the 10 digit mobile numbers scheme for issuing M2M connections as part of their enterprise offerings. However, the 10-digit mobile numbers scheme will now only be used for retail consumers.

The DoT has ordered all telecom service providers to ensure that their network elements including information technology (IT) and other relevant systems are aligned with 13 digit numbering for M2M SIMs before July 1, 2018.

Further, the DoT has mandated that the migration of existing 10 digit M2M numbers to 13 digits has to begin by October 1, 2018, and be completed by December 31, 2018.
