RJIL urges DoT to use only 4G technology for connecting the unconnected regions

February 14, 2018

Reliance Jio Infocomm Limited (RJIL) has urged the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) to use only 4G technology for providing mobile connectivity in unconnected villages and the north-east region of the country. At present, DoT has mandated the use of 2G for voice and 4G for data in the tenders floated by the Universal Service Obligation Fund (USOF).

However, according to RJIL the current mandates restrict its participation in the USOF tenders as high quality voice services can also be provided using 4G technology.  Further, RJIL has maintained that the use of outdated and expensive 2G for voice calls increases the cost of service and prevents licensed telecom operators from taking part in these tenders.

As per RJIL, such conditions are resulting in a monopoly of incumbent service providers which will also lead to a huge loss to the government owing to the lack of competition in the bidding process. Therefore, these tenders should prescribe service and coverage requirements from operators in a fair manner in order to enable wider participation.
