Google installs 150 ‘Google Station’ hotspots in Pune in partnership with L&T

January 31, 2018

Google has launched 150 ‘Google Station’ hotspots in partnership with Larsen and Toubro (L&T) in the city of Pune as a part of the Pune Smart City Development Corporation Limited’s Smart City project.  Under the contract, Google will assist in monetising the city Wi-Fi network along with the deployment of the Google Station platform. According to Google, the new hotspots in Pune would provide free Wi-Fi services to potentially, 3 million citizens across Pune. The free public WiFi will be available at public places like gardens, hospitals and police stations.

With the Google Station platform, the company is extending its Wi-Fi beyond stations to social gathering places such as malls, cafes, universities which are visited by a large number of people. This is the first time Google is deploying Google Station, which is a localised captive portal that enables the connection to public Wi-Fi outside of the railways.

So far, Google has been providing Wi-Fi services at approximately 270 railway stations across the country via its partnership with RailTel and Indian Railways. Its services have benefitted 7.7 million users across the country. Google aims to provide Wi-Fi services at 400 railway stations in total across India.
