Telecom Commission approves higher budget allocation for defence network project

January 10, 2018

The Telecom Commission has approved has approved a higher budget allocation for the Network for Spectrum (NFS) or the defence network project to Rs 246.64 billion as against an initial allocation of Rs 133 billion.

In October 2017, the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) proposed to increase the budget to set up the network from the initial Rs 133 billion by about Rs 113 billion.

Increase in allocation was proposed upon receiving recommendations of a separate committee including representatives from the Department of Economic Affairs, Department of Industrial Policy and Promotion and the Niti Aayog.

The defence ministry and DoT had signed an agreement in 2009-10 under which the former had agreed to vacate 25 MHz of 3G spectrum and 20 MHz of 2G spectrum in phases. In return, the DoT had committed to set up an exclusive defence network for its communication services.
