Kerala government to deploy public Wi-Fi hotspots across over 200 fishing villages

January 05, 2018

The Kerala government is planning to introduce public Wi-Fi hotspots in 222 fishing villages in the state. The initiative has been undertaken to enable the government to reach out to fishermen community and issue alerts to brief them about abnormal weather conditions. The initiative would cost around Rs 300 million.

To this end, the government has included its proposal in the report submitted to the Union government seeking Ockhi relief fund for the state. Moreover, the government has stated that even if it does not get central aid, the state will go ahead with the proposal. It added that smartphone penetration has increased among fishermen, who use it for various purposes such as arranging auction of their catch.

Further, it has been learnt that the state has the highest smartphone penetration in the country. The government also feels that Wi-Fi would enable the fishermen to do geo-fencing of boats, which was another hurdle which the state faced during cyclone Ockhi.
