Parliamentary committee recommends formulation of legislation on data privacy

January 04, 2018

In a report by the Parliamentary Standing Committee of Finance, the committee has recommended that the government should formulate legislation on data privacy at the earliest. The committee noted that as the economy becomes digital, data privacy is an imperative.

Further, the committee also suggested that a coordinating agency reporting directly to the Prime Minister’s Office be instated. As per the committee, the agency should have status at par with Space and Atomic Energy Departments, along with adequate budget. The report also highlighted the scarcity of trained professionals to deal with rising cyber threats. The committee called for the formation of data minimisation, data privacy and data residency law to ensure security of public and private data

The committee maintained that as the economy becomes digital, consumer grievances have also risen. To this end, the committee recommended establishing a common helpline number which consumers can approach with their grievances.
