DoT exploring ways to reduce litigation and address legacy issues such as penalties

January 02, 2018

The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) is in talks with telecom operators to outline ways to reduce litigation, under the new telecom policy (NTP). These talks are aimed at especially reducing legacy issues such as penalties.

The government and the industry have a mutual interest to reduce litigation, which has been a major obstacle in the growth of the sector in the past. High on the priority list are agendas which are no longer relevant. For example, the move to the Aadhaar based customer verification system for signing on new customers has eliminated issues arising around customer information.

For most of 2017, the DoT has formed several working groups to discuss the framework of the NTP, which is expected to be launched by March 2018. The industry would greatly benefit from clarity on all litigation that has either become irrelevant or dated in order to have a more conducive environment for the revival of the debt-laden telecom sector.
