TRAI to review policy structure to boost walkie-talkie usage

December 29, 2017

The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) is planning to review the policy structure governing the use of walkie-talkies in order to boost growth of the segment. To this end, the TRAI will float a consultation paper in January 2018 inviting comments and suggestions from the public and stakeholders.

According to the TRAI, the use of walkie-talkies has remained restricted and has not caught on as expected. Through the comments from the public and stakeholders, the TRAI will seek feedback on how to popularise and boost the uptake of walkie-talkies. The regulator will be considering several options such as auctioning of spectrum, as is done for mobile services; issuing a separate license and imposing a license fee if needed.

Currently, any company that wishes to start a public mobile radio trunking service (PMRTS) needs to secure a unified license from the Department of Telecommunications. The spectrum for the service comes bundled with the license.
