December 29, 2017

According to a report by Counterpoint, Apple registered an average profit per handset of $151 in the quarter ended September 2017. This figure is more than five times that of its closest competitor, Samsung, whose average profit per handset stood at $31 during the same period.

According to the report, global handsets profits increased by 13 per cent in the quarter, compared on a year-on-year basis. The report attributes this increase in profits to the strong performance of Samsung and other Chinese handset manufacturers.

Further, Chinese manufacturers such as Huawei, Oppo and Vivo reported average profit per handset of $15, $14 and $13 respectively. Xiaomi, however had a lower per unit profit of $2 as it operates on smaller margins as compared to its competitors.

Additionally, Huawei witnessed a 67 per cent growth in profits in the quarter when compared on a yearly basis, the highest among all companies. Appleā€™s profits accounted for approximately 60 per cent of the total profits in the mobile handset segment, followed by Samsung and Huawei which accounted for 26 per cent and 4.9 per cent of the total profits respectively.
