FDI in telecom crosses $6.08 billion in the first half of 2017-18, says DoT

December 29, 2017

According to the Department of Telecommunications (DoT), foreign direct investment (FDI) in the telecom sector has crossed the $6.08 billion mark in the first half of 2017-18. In comparison with 2016-17, FDI inflow in the industry has increased by approximately 10 per cent.

Earlier, the Department of Industrial Policy and Promotion had revealed that total FDI from 2014-15 up to May 2017 in the industry stood at $9.79 billion. The DoT is undertaking several initiatives to revive the debt laden telecom sector and is expected to launch the New Telecom Policy by March 2018.

To this end, the government has formed a committee comprising officials from the DoT, the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology and the Department of Science and Technology along with representatives from the industry and academia to evaluate and approve roadmaps for a large scale rollout of 5G in India by 2020 as well as development of relevant 5G use cases.
