BSNL to launch 4G LTE services in Kerala in January 2018

December 27, 2017

Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) is set to launch its 4G long term evolution (LTE) services in Kerala in January 2018. It will later launch these services in Odisha circle.

The telecom operator expects that the ensuing 4G launch through LTE network route will enable its mobile customers to enjoy faster data speeds and improve its user experience. The operator stated that the initial focus on 4G LTE launch will be on those areas where 3G network coverage is low.

Earlier, BSNL had sought additional 5 MHz spectrum from the government in the 2100 MHz band for the roll out of 4G services. BSNL currently has 5 MHz spectrum in the 2100 MHz band that would only be sufficient to get its 4G project rolling initially. The operator will need additional 5 MHz spectrum in the same band to expand its 4G services across the country. As per BSNL, the total valuation of the spectrum it is seeking would be around Rs 96 billion. The operator expects to pay half of this amount by issuing additional equity to the government and the rest through revenue generated from business.

Further, BSNL pointed that once it secures the additional 5 MHz spectrum, it will start rolling out 4G LTE services in Bengaluru, Hyderabad and other regions. The operator’s network will provide 2G, 3G and 4G services with enhanced data capability.

BSNL is also aiming to roll out 10,000 4G mobile towers by March 2018. The company plans to have a separate brand identity for 4G services which will be announced at the time of service roll out.
