DoT to set up dedicated ecosystem for testing 5G technologies

December 27, 2017

The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) is planning to set up a test bed for testing 5G technologies in collaboration with the Indian Institute of Technology, Madras. To this end, DoT has sought Rs 350 million in the second batch of supplementary demands for grants for 2017-18. The test bed is expected to be operational within the next six months.

The government had earlier formed a committee comprising officials from the DoT, the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology and the Department of Science and Technology along with representatives from the industry and academia to evaluate and approve roadmaps for a large scale rollout of 5G in India by 2020 as well as development of relevant 5G use cases. Meanwhile, the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India is also expected to issue recommendations to enable companies to conduct research on latest mobile telephony technologies such as 5G locally.
