MTNL eyes a turnaround; formulates Rs 42 billion plan to revive business

State-run telecom operator Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Limited (MTNL) has formulated a transformation plan which would entail an expenditure of Rs 42 billion. As per the plan, of the total, Rs 21 billion will be spent on improving its mobile business while the remaining Rs 21.4 billion will be allocated for revamping its wireline network.

The operator, which offers services in the cities of Mumbai and New Delhi, is planning to launch 4G services as well as expand its 3G user base. To this end, it is planning to install 2,000 3G base transceiver stations (BTS) and 1,000 4G BTS’ each in Delhi and Mumbai. In addition, the company is also planning to modernise its billing and information technology (IT) infrastructure.

The revival plan comes at a time when the government has been seriously contemplating disinvestment in several loss-making central public sector undertakings.
