Telecom operators to provide connectivity for deploying smart meters in UP and Haryana

December 08, 2017

Telecom players such as Airtel, Vodafone, Idea and Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) are being called to provide connectivity as part of Energy Efficiency Services Limited’s (EESL) tender for the deployment of 5 million smart meters across Uttar Pradesh and Haryana.

Reliance Jio Infocomm Limited (RJIL), however, will not be participating in the said deployment. This is due to the fact that the smart metering technologies are rudimentary. Therefore, RJIL’s 4G technology would be unsuitable.

The tender is divided into meter procurement and system integration. System integrators will take care of meter installation, data storage on cloud, among other things.

Telecom operators are being roped in by system integrators to provide connectivity. A smart meter can automatically send meter readings to the power supplier for billing and help consumers better understand their energy usage.
